Syria releases opposition figure at end of jail term |

DAMASCUS — Syria released from jail on Wednesday the opposition figure and former MP, Riad Seif, at the end of a sentence for damaging the image of the state and publishing lies, a rights group said.
Seif, 64, was among 12 people who signed what was known as the Declaration of Damascus, which called for democratic reforms in Syria. They were all sentenced in late 2008 to two and a half years in prison.

The Kurds of Syria always getting a raw deal
On March 21, 2010, the Syrian security forces opened fire with live ammunition on a crowd of 5,000 in the northern Syrian town of al-Raqqah. The crowd had gathered to celebrate the Kurdish festival of Nowruz. Three people, including a 15-year-old girl, were killed. Over 50 were injured. Dozens of injured civilians were held incommunicado by the authorities following the events. Some remain incarcerated. This incident was just one example of the repression taking place of the largest national minority in Syria – namely, the Syrian Kurdish population.

Point criterion of refugees arrived in Syria to 8.9 points, and is attributed by some to the drought situation in Al-Jazeera (northen east Syria) because of the policies of neglect by the regime to the Al-Jazeera's population of Syria.

Kurdistan Regional Government Should Outlaw the Practice June 16, 2010 (Arbil) - A significant number of girls and women in Iraqi Kurdistan suffer female genital mutilation (FGM) and its destructive after-effects, Human Rights Watch said today in a new report. The Kurdistan Regional Government should take immediate action to end FGM and develop a long term plan for its eradication, including passing a law to ban the practice, Human Rights Watch said.

After completing a 30 month sentence in prison, Ali Al-Abdullah packed up his belongings, said his goodbyes, and promptly found himself re-arrested.
Abdullah was arrested in December 2007 after he and 163 dissidents organized a meeting in which they called for democratic peaceful change in Syria. Abdullah served his full 2½ year sentence, during which he was subjected to torture. In addition to these two arrests, Abdullah was arrested in 1994, 2005, and 2006 for participating in interviews and protests.

 Date: 18 May 2010 Anwer Naso, Hassan Saleh, Ma’rouf Mulla Ahmed and Muhammad Ahmed Mustafa are all reported to have been brought before a military prosecutor in Damascus on 19 April. Anwer Naso was released without charge three days later, on 22 April, but the three others remain in detention apparently under investigation.
